In September 1939, Nazi Germany's invasion of Poland marked the beginning of the Second World War. The harrowing events that ensued have been well-documented, and now Apple TV+ has brought Donald L. Miller’s book "Masters of the Air" to the screen to honor the courageous men of the U.S. Air Force's 100th Bomb Group.
These men undertook daring bombing missions over Nazi Germany, aiming to cripple Hitler's military forces by striking airfields, naval facilities, and industrial plants beyond enemy lines.
The new Apple TV+ series spotlights the heroes who confronted the extreme cold, oxygen deprivation, and the intense terror of combat at 25,000 feet in the air.
Callum Turner expressed his familiarity with World War II but admitted to being unaware of the remarkable story of the 100th Bomb Group, also known as the “Bloody Hundredth.”
"It is important to highlight their legacy and the extraordinary feats of the 100th and 8th Air Force. They knowingly placed themselves in incredibly perilous situations, enduring the most intense warfare imaginable for prolonged periods. Their sacrifices were made for all of us," he conveyed to Spectrum News.
“Masters of the Air” also delves into the psychological and emotional toll of war on those at the forefront. Anthony Boyle, portraying Maj. Harry Crosby, aims for this aspect to deeply resonate with the audience.
"In this series, we explore the mental well-being of these men. They flew high up in the air in their aircraft, with a significant percentage—between 70 to 77—never to return."
Raff Law, who portrays Sgt. Ken Lemmons, shared with Spectrum News that he had the opportunity to meet the real-life family of his character. "It was an incredible, surreal moment to witness their father's story being retold," he expressed. "It was a truly special experience."
"Masters of the Air" is currently available for streaming on Apple TV+. The show's executive producers, including Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks, and Gary Goetzman, previously collaborated on "Band of Brothers" and "The Pacific."
The cast of the series features acclaimed actors such as Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Nate Mann, Rafferty Law, Barry Keoghan, Josiah Cross, Branden Cook, and Ncuti Gatwa.
