Brazil is defeated by Wemby, France: Group Standings Ahead of the 2024 Olympic Basketball KO Bracket

 

France is led by Victor Wembanyama to victory.

Men's basketball in Group B at the Summer Olympics in Paris, France defeated Brazil 78-66 on Saturday thanks to 19 points apiece from Victor Wembanyama and Nicolas Batum.

In addition to adding nine rebounds, four steals, three blocks, and two assists, Wembanyama had an incredible performance in his Olympic debut. In the first half, when France trailed by as many as 12 points before taking a 39-36 lead at the intermission, he went 7 of 13 from the field and notably recorded a 14-point, five-rebound performance.


With 14 points in the second half, Batum lead France. In the third quarter, he assisted France in defeating Brazil 18-9, giving them a 57-45 lead into the fourth.

With little under six minutes left in regulation, Brazil pulled within 62-58, but a 7-0 surge led by a fast-break basket by Batum gave France the victory back.

Australia defeated Spain 92–80 earlier in the day thanks to 19 points from Patty Mills and 20 from Jock Landale.

Australia started the game strong, outscoring Spain 31–21 in the first quarter. From then on, Australia maintained a comfortable advantage against Spain, despite the latter cutting the margin to as little as three points in the third quarter.


Five Australians scored in double figures, with Dyson Daniels (13 points), Josh Giddey (17 points), and Jack McVeigh rounding out the scoring group. Giddey contributed eight assists as well, helping the Australian team make 12 out of 24 three-pointers.

With 27 points, Santi Aldama of Spain was the top scorer.
Then, after Franz Wagner led the winners with 22 points, Germany overcame Japan 97-77. Germany won handily and shot 54 percent from the field. Daniel Theis scored eighteen additional points for the winning team. With a double-double of 13 points and 12 rebounds from Dennis Schröder, the German bench defeated the Japan team's reserves 38–7.

Japan shot a pitiful 36 percent from the field. Japan was paced by 20-point, 10-rebound double-double player Rui Hachimura. Yuta Watanabe chipped in 16 points as well.
